The free Drive Confident e-learning programme run by Drivetech for refugees has now been accessed over 2,000 times, marking a new milestone.
Run in partnership with the AA Charitable Trust, the initiative supports Ukrainian and Afghan refugees in adapting to UK road regulations and driving safely.
The programme is a free resource for refugees and has become an essential tool for those unfamiliar with British driving laws and practices.
Initially launched to assist Ukrainian nationals, the module has been expanded to help Afghan refugees, with content available in both Pashto and Dari languages.
The module offers support for safe driving and navigating the UK’s roads, paving the way for integration and opening up further employment opportunities. The programme provides clear, practical guidance on topics such as UK road regulations and the Highway Code, safe driving practices for challenging weather and understanding licence exchange requirements for refugees.
For Ukrainian refugees in Great Britain, the training module complements existing laws that allow drivers to drive for up to three years before exchanging their licence, as outlined in regulations updated in July 2023.
Meanwhile, Afghan refugees arriving in the UK under resettlement schemes such as the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS) or the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) with valid non-UK international driving licences can drive in the UK for up to a year from the date of arrival, providing their vehicle is taxed, insured and holds a valid MOT certificate.
Edmund King, director of the AA Charitable Trust, said: “We are delighted this initiative is helping refugees access important road safety information about the UK. Being able to get about independently and safely is an important step in settling into life in the UK.
“The continued interest in the module shows just how valuable a tool it is.”
Nick Butler, director of Drivetech, added: “We are thrilled to see our initiative gaining traction and making a real difference. By helping refugees feel confident and safe on UK roads, we’re enabling smoother transitions into their new lives.”
