Lytx and DriveTech outline fleet safety best practice in new Brake report

New guidance is now available to help fleet managers become more effective leaders for road safety, not only protecting their drivers but also other road users.

Developed by Brake as part of its free-to-join Global Fleet Champions campaign, the report sets out best practice advice for fleet managers on safe and healthy mobility.

This includes a discussion from Lytx on what it takes to deliver a culture of safety and how to secure senior leadership support for new initiatives, while Colin Paterson, marketing director at DriveTech, offers advice on how to develop leadership within an organisation.

Independent leadership consultant Scott Gould also gives examples of effective leaders from different sectors, and Peter Milchard, lead tutor for the Institute of Car Fleet Management, discusses why strong leadership is important to protect your drivers.

The guidance also features a case study from Gateshead Council, sharing how it has overhauled its driver training and enhanced safety policies after finding that new drivers and vehicles were not meeting its high safety and leadership standards.

Sarah Plumb, senior fleet officer at Brake, the road safety charity, said: “Any organisation that cares about road safety should look to embed a culture of leadership at all levels where staff take responsibility for safety and are empowered to find their own effective solutions to problems they encounter.”

Damian Penney, vice president of Lytx, Europe, added: “When fleets concentrate on driving behaviours with a focus on safe driving, they not only make the roads a safer place for everyone, they also can reduce costs that arise from collisions, claims, insurance as well as fuel, vehicle maintenance and repair costs.”
