Europcar to connect entire fleet by 2023 under Telefónica and Geotab deal

Europcar Mobility Group is aiming to connect its entire fleet by 2023 under an expanded partnership with Telefónica and Geotab.

The group already had 44,000 connected cars in 2019 as part of its global Connected Cars programme and the latest tie-up with the two firms will enable real-time telematics monitoring of the entire vehicle fleet to enhance the customer experience.

Following on from a pilot in Mallorca in 2018, the first stage of deployment is planned in France in 2020 starting with the vans and trucks fleet; other countries will follow in 2021.

The data will provide insights into engine usage, driving behaviour and GPS location including distances travelled, mileage, speed, acceleration, fuel level and accident detection.

This will not only improve customer hires but will also enable the group to optimise business applications and internal processes such as fleet inventory management, vehicle delivery and collection, vehicle maintenance, vehicle return and more.

“As a leading mobility service company, Europcar Mobility Group sees technology as a strong enabler of both operational excellence and value creation. We chose Telefonica and Geotab for their agile, service-orientated solutions, their cutting-edge mobility and fleet management technologies as well as their international coverage,” declared Olivier Baldassari, chief countries & operations officer of Europcar Mobility Group.

“Thanks to great partners such as Telefónica and Europcar Mobility Group, we are advancing essential connected car technology every day,” said Neil Cawse, CEO of Geotab. “Collaborating with industry leaders around the world allows us to better enable fleet ecosystems to develop maintenance and sustainability programmes that can help optimise the cost of ownership of each vehicle.”
