Driver appetite for more Clean Air Zones revealed in Venson research

More than a third of drivers believe the Government should introduce more Clean Air Zones as well as encourage an increase in the take-up of electric vehicles.

The research, revealed by Venson Automotive Solutions to mark Clean Air Day today (8 October), found that 38% of drivers are supportive of increased use of Clean Air Zones, rising to 55% among young people (18-24 years).

The research, undertaken earlier this year and published as Bath announces its charging Clean Air Zone will go live in March 2021, shows some regional differences too – 53% of people in Scotland, 50% in the North East and 50% in London believed more clean air zones would have an effect on EV numbers.

Venson’s survey also found nearly half 47% of people want to play their part in reducing pollution by tackling traffic emissions.

But the fleet management firm – which recently published an updated list of CAZs – said fleets should build on increasing awareness of climate change and the need for action. It believes that fleet operators can make a contribution to addressing emissions levels by educating company car drivers of the benefits of switching to electric and reviewing the potential adding electric vans to their fleets.

Alison Bell, marketing director at Venson Automotive Solutions, said: “For businesses coping with recent and rapid changes in company car and van use, a focus on improving sustainability and embracing the benefits of EVs has perhaps understandably taken a back seat. However, Clean Air Day is a great initiative which will help to bring this important issue centre stage.

“Fleet managers have an important role to play in ensuring that the UK meets its emission targets and protects people’s health by embracing ‘green fleets’. There has been a dramatic increase in the choice of EVs available, more attractive tax incentives, especially the 0% Benefit-in-Kind rate for company car drivers and further investment in EV charging points, all of which should make companies more confident about investing in eco-friendly vehicles.”
