Commuters in the capital can now get hold of a free map on central London walking routes to enable everyday trips.
The map has been developed by Transport for London (TfL), in partnership with London Living Streets, as it continues to promote the benefits of walking, cycling and using the bus.
Last month saw the organisation warn that recovery from coronavirus must not be car-led. As London’s safe public transport capacity continues to be restricted while social distancing measures remain, millions of journeys a day will need to be made by other means, but if people switch these journeys to cars, London risks grinding to a halt, air quality will worsen, and road danger will increase, according to TfL.
Alongside work to transform roads to facilitate active travel and the Streetspace for London Plan to introduce extra pavement space, the new map will provide Londoners with details on the Central London Footways network of routes connecting the capital’s mainline railway stations, popular destinations and green spaces with its most appealing and accessible streets.
Christina Calderato, head of transport strategy and planning at TfL, said: “These quiet and accessible routes highlight just how easy and surprisingly quick it is to explore our city on foot.
“Throughout this pandemic, we’ve been reminded of the value of our health, and walking is ideal for giving both our mental and physical health a welcome boost. Encouraging more people to introduce more walking into their daily routine will also be vital for improving air quality and reducing congestion, making London a nicer place to live for all.”
The physical, free map is available at several central London locations, which can be found online at www.footways.london alongside more information about the network.
